Pads pop on Monday

With temperatures well over 100 degrees, Oklahoma State donned full pads for the first time in the 2008 season on Monday afternoon.

"We had a good first day in pads," said head coach Mike Gundy. "It was nice and warm out there in a 2-hour, 15-minute practice. There was a lot of enthusiasm and a lot of collisions."

According to Gundy, the team finished up the practice by doing some hitting. Though we couldn't watch that portion of practice, the media assembled outside could hear pads popping and hoots and hollers from players and coaches.

All that hitting was music to defensive coordinator Tim Beckman's ears.

"It's a great drill, an 'ender' to the first day in full pads," said Beckman. "I think everybody in the country does it (or something similar) and it's great to see those young guys get after it.

For Beckman's money, his big guys on the line were the most impressive overall in the one-on-one drill.

"The defensive line really stood out in that drill," said Beckman. "I thought they did a real good job of coming off of the line, with low pads, getting good hand placement and driving their feet. They really stood out."

OSU will hold its first two-a-day session on Tuesday, with practices starting at 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Tuesday is also the final day of practice with any open portions currently on the schedule. Roughly the first hour of each session is open to fans and media.
