Brown ready to check out Ole Miss

Michael Brown is not attending Ole Miss' invitation-only camp on July 26.

He's coming to Oxford, Miss., a week earlier instead.

The 6-foot-6, 312-pound offensive guard from Lexington, Texas, has maintained steady contact with Ole Miss offensive line coach Mike Markuson since Markuson traveled to the Lone Star State to check Brown out in April.

"Usually, at least two or three times a week, Coach Markuson will email me," Brown said. "I talk to him like that. That's about the only coach there I talk to. He's cool. I like him. I like the fact that he's known Coach (Houston) Nutt for 19 years."

Ole Miss is very much in the mix for Brown's signature, along with Arizona, Baylor, Kansas, Houston, Tulane and Stanford. Brown has taken unofficial visits to Colorado and Oklahoma already this summer and he plans to take one to Baylor later this month. Otherwise, everything "has been kind of calm and enjoyable this summer. (The swing through Colorado and Oklahoma) was pretty cool. I got to meet a lot of people. The coaches were pretty cool. I just wanted to look around up there."

The trip to Oxford is one Brown has anticipated for months. The three-star standout has always been interested in playing in the Southeastern Conference, and both sets of great-grandparents were from Mississippi. So while Brown will be visiting a state where he has plenty of family roots, he's also going to a place he's never seen.

"I've never been to the South," Brown said. "I haven't really been anywhere like that. I really don't know what to expect."

Brown said he doesn't anticipate making anything resembling a commitment during his visit to Oxford or the subsequent trip to Waco. However, he won't completely rule a commitment out, either.

"I'm going to check out everything before I make a decision," Brown said. "Really everybody that's offered is in it. I want to take all five visits, but if I go somewhere and know that's where I want to go, I'll do it."
