Spain Park DT Considering UAB
Spain Park defensive tackle Darius McMullen is a popular man these days. Eight universities, including UAB, are recruiting the star athlete. Seven have already made scholarship offers. He's still looking at his options before making a decision, but says UAB has three advantage. The school is close to home, he likes the coaches, and he would get a chance to play early. That's why he's planning an unofficial visit to the school next week.
"I've met Coach [Tyson] Helton and Coach [Neil] Callaway," McMullen said. "They seemed really nice, and cool."
UAB is still in the running, but seven others have recruited the lineman. That includes three SEC teams - Ole Miss, Kentucky, and Vanderbilt.
There's also a Conference USA rival in the mix. Central Florida has also offered McMullen a scholarship.
Others seeking the defensive lineman's commitment are Georgia Southern, Louisiana Tech, and Middle Tennessee. He has already received scholarship offers from most of those schools, with Middle Tennessee the only exception.
The appeal of UAB is obvious to the Birmingham-area resident. "I like the fact that its close to home, and I'd have a chance to play early," said McMullen.
UAB's recent problems with its APR rating is not a problem. "I've talked with the coaches, and they've told me that's been handle," McMullen said.
What is important is how he will fit with the university. Academically, he's not sure what that might be, since he hasn't yet decided on what will be his collegiate major.
Ultimately, he said, "I'd like to play early and go to a school known for its academics."
