Spring Fling - Sanchez Secures Starting Spot

Three weeks into spring football Pete Carroll finally pulled the trigger and named redshirt junior Mark Sanchez the starting quarterback. The move allows Sanchez to lead the team for not only the final few practices of the spring, but also the summer workouts as well.

"We made the decision that if we were going to play a game this week we were going to name a quarterback," Carroll told the media after practice. "Mark's the guy that would get that call."

The announcement doesn't mean that the competition is over, not by a long shot. Mitch Mustain and Aaron Corp will have their chance to win the job again when fall camp opens in August.

"I'm expecting both Mitch and Aaron to grow and when they come back to fall camp they'll make a big leap and we'll look at everything all over again," Carroll said. "It's so important for those guys to be ready because they're always a play away from being the guy."

Offensive coordinator and quarterback coach Steve Sarkisian is comfortable with the decision.

"With four practices to go, if we're heading into a game on Saturday, to make Mark the No. 1 guy, we feel like he gives us the best chance to go out and win," he said after Tuesday's practice. "We want to see how the team reacts to him these four practices, how he reacts to this, his confidence as we head into the summer.

"And then when we come back in fall camp, we'll give those guys, Aaron and Mitch, every opportunity to compete and go try to win the job. They've both shown some really nice things. They've both gotten better, but at this point for the good of our football team, I like where we're at with Mark."
