Burns closes spring with a bang

Kodi Burns and Chris Todd finished spring practice just as they started it: Neck and neck atop Auburn's quarterback depth chart.

But Burns' big day was the biggest story of Wednesday's scrimmage, the last day of spring practice.

The sophomore completed his first 10 passes Wednesday night and finished with 213 yards on 12-of-15 passing. He threw two touchdown passes and led Auburn's first-team offense to 21 points.

Burns' improvement has impressed offensive coordinator Tony Franklin. Early in spring practice, Franklin adjusted Burns' footwork, changing the way he delivered the football.

The results were clear in the final two days of spring practice. A confident-looking Burns completed a combined 26 of 36 passes for 355 yards in Saturday's A-Day game and Wednesday's scrimmage.

According to Franklin, the new footwork is mostly responsible for Burns' late surge. But he says some of the credit belongs to Todd, the Tigers' co-No. 1 quarterback.

"We hoped (Burns) would get that good, and he has," said Franklin. "He's gotten better, and I think Chris has made him better. Competition makes you better, if you're a great player. He's gotten better and he's answered the call."
