Tigers host Gamecocks Saturday
Guaranteed a losing conference record and a longshot for postseason play, Auburn still has a lot to play for when South Carolina visits Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum Saturday night.
The Tigers (14-12, 4-9 SEC) are in a four-way tie with Alabama, LSU and Ole Miss for third place in the SEC West. With two straight home games against USC (12-15, 4-9) and Georgia (12-14, 3-10), AU has a chance to make a run for a strong finish in the conference.
The Gamecocks come into the matchup losers of five of six including a 62-55 home loss to LSU. USC is led by point guard Devan Downey who is second in the SEC in scoring at 19.2 points per game and assists with 5.1. The 5-foot-9 sophomore leads the SEC with 3.2 steals per game.
"Devan Downey is just terrific," said AU head coach Jeff Lebo. "I think he is one of the best players in the country under 6-feet. He can finish right and left at the rim. When he is making jump shots from the perimeter, he is almost unguardable."
