Beasley leads Cats to romp over Mizzou
Apparently the Missouri Tigers didn't review the Winston-Salem game tape. It was at halftime of that contest that some trash talking inspired freshman Michael Beasley to a career-high 40 points. Following Missouri's win over Kansas State two weeks ago in Columbia, some Tigers let Beasley hear some parting shots.
Beasley didn't forget.
"I took the loss in Columbia personally," Beasley said. "There were a lot of things said that I didn't like. I made it my business to help the team win."
Beasley recorded a double-double less than 14 minutes into the game and the Wildcats held Missouri without a field goal for more than seven minutes in the first half as No. 18 K-State roared to a 21-point halftime lead on its way to a 100-63 victory on Saturday at Bramlage Coliseum.
Beasley, who scored just 17 points in Columbia, a 77-74 Missouri win that saw the Wildcats blow a double-digit lead in the second half, roared out of the gates in this game as the national player of the year candidate poured in a career-high-tying 40 points and tallied 17 rebounds in the victory.
The 6-foot-10 freshman grabbed his 10th rebound of the game to go with 17 points with 6:53 left in the first half. The scoring continued for Beasley, but he was not alone in his outstanding performance as fellow freshman Bill Walker scored 16 first-half points on his way to 18 for the game.
"Our guys were great. They were relentless," Beasley said. "We came out with a chip on our shoulder. We played with heart. We played together. We need to keep playing like that."
K-State was coming off an 84-75 loss at Texas Tech on Wednesday night, but Coach Frank Martin didn't doubt how his team would respond.
"They don't like to lose, You should have seen our practices the last couple of days," Martin said. "They didn't come here to lose and they don't enjoy losing. They're true guys who have a lot of pride. You always want to beat a team that beat you the first time around."
