Lost in Alabama's 17-12 upset loss against Mississippi State Saturday was its best defensive performance of the season. The Bulldogs threw for only 100 yards, and rushed for only 115. A quick glance at how Alabama's stop unit has fared in Southeastern Conference games this season:

14 Alabama's defense allowed only 14 first downs to the Bulldogs.

44.8 Punter P.J. Fitzgerald enjoyed his best game of the season with a 44.8-yard average on four attempts.

75 For the third time this season, Alabama had no players record more than 100 all-purpose yards. Terry Grant led UA with 75. Other such games were Georgia and Florida State.

Penalty points
Alabama was penalized just once Saturday for five yards, and continues to lead the SEC in fewest penalties with 48. Ironically, Alabama also leads the league in penalties by opponents. UA opponents have drawn 93 penalties this year. ... With four of its 23 first downs coming by penalty Saturday, Alabama has now picked up 35 first downs by penalty on the season, by far the most in the SEC.
