Quick hits from NC State's exhibition win over UNC-P

Quick hits and notes from NC State's 76-41 exhibition win over UNC-Pembroke on Tuesday night at the RBC Center.

Player of the game

There was no real standout in this effort for the Pack. Perhaps the biggest surprise was how well sophomore guard Trevor Ferguson played. He, along with freshman forward Tracy Smith, were the first two subs off the bench for NC State at the 14:50 mark in the first half. Ferguson would go on to play 24 minutes, more than any reserve in the game for either team, and make 3 of 7 shots, all three-pointers, for nine points. He added a team-high eight rebounds and contributed three assists with no turnovers.

Play of the game

We've seen it before, but it never gets old. Off an assist from junior big man Ben McCauley, senior wing forward Gavin Grant went uncontested on a fast break and did his trademark reverse, two-handed windmill dunk. It was reminiscent to his throw down last year in the big win over North Carolina at the RBC Center.

Honorable mention goes to another Grant fast break basket. This time Grant wrapped the ball around his back to avoid a defender and then went up for a layup.

Javi's debut coming?

After the game in his press conference coach Sidney Lowe said that freshman point guard Javi Gonzalez returned to practice this week and could have played Tuesday night if needed. Gonzalez is expected to be ready for the season opener Nov. 15 against William & Mary. Lowe mentioned that Gonzalez is shooting very well.
