Red Storm aim to surprise

For the St. John's Red Storm, the 2007-2008 season will be something different for head coach Norm Roberts and company.

Many say it's a rebuilding year, while others say this could be the year the Red Storm make some noise in the tough Big East.

"With the team we have, I think we can be very good," Roberts said at the Red Storm Media Day at Taffner Field House. "We're not picked to do much, but we're going to sneak up on a few teams."

The reason for the lack of belief is simple. The Red Storm lost two of their top scorers from a year ago with Lamont Hamilton graduating and Avery Patterson transferring.

Things didn't get any better when sophomore Qa'rrann Calhoun decided to transfer as well in late August. Throw seven new freshmen into the mix and it is be hard to believe the Red Storm can make a run.

But Roberts feels optimistic about his group.
