GTown presser reveals group optimism and focus
October 12, 2007 - It's that time of the year again, when the press converges on Georgetown's McDonough Arena, querying not only returning players, but also head coach John Thompson III regarding the prospects of an up coming season. Whereas last year's team held a top five preseason ranking going into that campaign - standing which in retrospect was prescient given the team's Final Four appearance and 30-7 record - and the overall message was Thompson's charges needed to round into that expected form despite the loss of three seniors, this year's squad has different concerns, yet similar expectations.
Presently holding a number ten preseason rank by Rivals.com, this pack of Hoyas is wrestling with the loss of the fifth pick in the National Basketball Association draft, would-have-been senior Jeff Green, resulting in differing roles for existing players, plus the arrival of two new coaches. Despite those challenges, the mood yesterday at McDonough could be described as optimism informed by experience; not surprising given the return of Roy Hibbert, Jessie Sapp, Jonathan Wallace, and DaJuan Summers, all starters on last year's team.
Despite losing Green, one of the best players in Georgetown Hoops history being impossible to simply ignore, Thompson's has moved on. "No one is going to take Jeff Green's position (in stature, on the team), and I as a coach
don't look at it like that" stated the talented leader of G'Town's Men's Basketball program. "It's a totally different group, with different strengths, different weaknesses, different players. The thought of Jeff and how it relates to this group, there is no thought".
