Saunders emerges as tight end threat
A week ago, Weslye Saunders didn't know which direction his freshman season would go.
After catching a single 20-yard pass in his debut against Louisiana-Lafayette, Saunders stood on the sidelines for the next two games while South Carolina defeated Georgia and S.C. State.
USC head coach Steve Spurrier talked about trying to obtain a medical redshirt for the 6-foot-5, 279-pound freshman from Durham, N.C.
Then USC faced LSU last Saturday in Baton Rouge.
The first half of the game came and went without a Saunders sighting.
Suddenly, looking to jumpstart the lethargic Gamecock offense, Spurrier inserted Saunders and backup QB Chris Smelley into the lineup in the second half.
