Wednesday Insider: Ellis educating O'Dowd

Sedrick Ellis and Kristofer O'Dowd never figured to have much to do with each other.

Ellis is a fifth-year senior defensive tackle, and O'Dowd is a true freshman center. Their units spar in practice, but Ellis entered as a reigning All-American, O'Dowd as USC's No. 3 center. Each position has its own drills, its own meetings, its own preparation.

But the two became linked early in fall camp, when Ellis relentlessly berated O'Dowd - your typical freshman hazing - with words unfit for print. Lately, O'Dowd has been able to give a little back.

After starting center Matt Spanos tore his right triceps before the season opener against Idaho, Jeff Byers took over snapping duties for one day, before coaches decided to leave the junior at left guard and give O'Dowd the start.
