FINE-TUNING FOR GAME DAY
Wednesday night's scrimmage was a workout that focused heavily on special teams work and the general game-day nuances, and Mack Brown came away pleased with the team's overall effort.
The Horns went through a 1 ½ hour scrimmage, complete with a pre-game meal and pre-game meetings. In another step towards simulating a game-day situation, the team entered the stadium through Gate 32, different than its normal routine of entering through the North end of the stadium, which is still undergoing heavy construction.
"We really felt like, as much as anything tonight, game day organization, kicking game, substitution and trying to make decisions on kicking game was as important as anything," Brown said.
Ryan Bailey has tightened his grip on the starting place-kicking duties and he was perfect in his attempts on Wednesday. Hunter Lawrence is the back-up at place-kicker, although Lawrence is still designated as the team's kick-off specialist. Justin Moore and Trevor Gerland are neck and neck in the race for the starting punting job. Quan Cosby is penciled in as the team's top kick and punt returner, while Will Harvey will handle the deep snapping on punts and Derek Lokey the snapping for field goals. Jordan Shipley will hold.
