Notebook: Good scrimmage for defense
In a scrimmage where the offense stuck to the basics and focused mainly on the running game, it's no surprise that AU's defense stepped up and made most of the big plays Saturday.
Well, at least that's what AU head coach Tommy Tuberville and many of the players said afterwards about a scrimmage that was closed to the public and media.
"We made some interceptions in the endzone, stopped some drives," said Tuberville. "I thought we broke on the ball well, tackled well."
Tuberville singled out three players who stood out on defense in d-end Quentin Groves, linebacker Tray Blackmon and cornerback Jerraud Powers.
"Jerraud Powers, a guy who had his shoulder operated on after the bowl game last year, I thought tackled well," said Tuberville. "That was his first real contact, a big day for him.
