Patterson: Gillispie makes strong impression

As one of the most highly sought-after basketball prospects in the country, Patrick Patterson has heard coaches tell him countless times that they have a "plan" for him.

Many times, he winds up shrugging it off as nothing more than the obligatory sales pitch.

So when the five-star Huntington (W.Va.) power forward played host to Billy Gillispie for an in-home visit Monday night, he admits he was a little surprised when the new Kentucky coach literally laid out a comprehensive plan for his college future.

"Most coaches say they have a plan for you, but it's usually the same stuff you always hear," Patterson said. "Coach Gillispie, he kind of caught me off guard. He came in here with a bunch of plays he had on paper showing exactly how they were going to use me. He had halfcourt plays, transition plays, one-on-one plays, out-of-bounds plays, sideline plays, defense… really everything.
