Signee Update: Williams Has Put in the Work

After a couple of years of size being a constant source of worry for his team, Bruce Pearl made it a point to go out and sign a big man in the Vols' 2007 recruiting class. Pearl and his staff had to do some scrambling late, but upgraded the size on the roster significantly by finding and landing Brian Williams from Cincinnati's Harmony Prep.

At 6-foot-10, Williams has the kind of size that will make him an immediate post presence, but at the time that the Vols signed him in November, his height wasn't the concern, but his weight was. Williams started his senior year he weighed in the neighborhood of 350 pounds.

At that weight, it's hard to imagine him being much of a factor in Pearl's frenetic style. The good news for the Vols is that Williams is no longer at that weight, or anywhere close to it.

When he accepted Tennessee's late offer in the fall, he did so with the very clear understanding that his opportunity to help the team would be closely tied to his ability to shed some weight and make some serious progress in his overall conditioning.
