Smith looking forward to new role
Oklahoma coaches have talked about players in the past who have sacrificed personal goals in favor of the team. It was talked about a lot with Paul Thompson when he made the move back to quarterback after Rhett Bomar's dismissal from the team less than a year ago.
But another player who has made sacrifices for the team over the last two years has been Reggie Smith. Sooner coaches have always said that Smith's natural position is cornerback. And many believe he can be a shutdown corner at Oklahoma.
He'll have an opportunity to prove he is just that in 2007 as Smith made a full-time move back to corner after manning the strong safety position during his freshman and sophomore years at Oklahoma.
Smith talked with SoonerScoop.com Editor Carey Murdock about his time at corner this spring and his expectations for next season both as a cornerback and a kick returner heading into the 2007 season.
SoonerScoop.com: I haven't really talked to you a whole lot during the spring but I just wondering if you could tell me about the move back to corner and how you felt about your progress this spring?
Reggie Smith: I thought it went well. It just took me a little bit to get used to it again. But it's just like riding a bike. After a while you get used to it again.
SS.com: As far as the move goes, are you confident everything is in place and that's where you'll be once the fall gets here?
Smith: Who knows. I'm just trying to get out here and make plays and throughout the offseason I'm just going to focus on trying to get better at the cornerback position.
SS.com: Is there anything about playing corner that frees you up or takes things off your mind that allows you to be a better returner on special teams?
Smith: It'll probably help because my body is going to take less abuse because I won't be up there with all the big guys. That will help when I'm out there as a punt returner. So that's about it.
