A new home

Most informed Kansas State fans can tell you why Bob Huggins left K-State so suddenly after one season to return to West Virginia. It's about going home. As Frank Martin looked into a sea of black T-shirts on Feb. 19, he knew he had found a place he could call home.

With Huggins ailing from the flu, Martin was called upon to address the student section before K-State's "Big Monday" game with Kansas. The students had declared the game a "blackout," showing their solidarity by wearing black shirts, and with the game hours away, they were in a frenzy.

Miami will always be home for Frank Martin, but this night made him think something he never before imagined about Manhattan, Kan.

"I never want to leave here. It was unbelievable," Martin said. "That's the thought process I had when I sat in front of those kids."

Who knows when Frank Martin will leave Manhattan? Maybe it will be in three years as he goes down in a ball of college basketball coaching flames. Maybe it will be much longer. Like around retirement.

Only time will tell, but that's true for any new head coach. Sure things turn into busts. Rising stars take a fall. And the darnedest characters turn out to be great coaches.
