Morton's first day
If the devil is in the details, then it's obvious why John Morton is no longer a Saint.
From passing game coordinator to wide receivers coach, Morton puts every move on the practice field under a microscope. His subjects are inexperienced, but after the first day of spring football, the former pro coach is pleased with what he has to work with.
In 2006, Dwayne Jarrett and Steve Smith combined for 140 receptions. USC's current fleet of wide receivers has 33 career receptions, not including Damian Williams' 19 receptions as a freshman at Arkansas.
While this year's passing attack may lack results, the first day of spring practice was about capitalizing on potential production.
"Coming out to practice was just awesome," said Morton. "The energy level was great, and I thought the big wide receivers - David Ausberry, Patrick Turner and Vidal Hazelton - made some good plays, but everyone contributed.
