Notebook: Offense on a mission

Auburn's offensive players knew the defense would be gunning for them heading into Wednesday's final scrimmage of the spring.

The offense put up big numbers in Saturday's A-Day game and Wednesday was going to be the defense's turn to bounce back and prove that A-Day was just a fluke.

That was the plan, at least.

A plan that quickly fell to pieces as AU's offense sliced and diced the defense for 10 touchdowns and 12 plays of 20 or more yards.

It all started on the first play of scrimmage when receiver Rod Smith caught a short slant from quarterback Brandon Cox, faked out two defenders and took off 75 yards for a touchdown.

By the time it was over, Cox had thrown for 302 yards and three touchdowns on just 14 completions, Smith and Robert Dunn had both gone over the 100-yard receiving mark and running backs Mario Fannin and Tristan Davis had combined for over 300 yards rushing and six touchdowns.
