Whataburger Tournament draws big crowd

The 47th annual Whataburger Tournament has been named as one of the top five Holiday tournaments in the country by USA Today, and this season's version didn't disappoint.

With three divisions - Orange (5A), White (4A) and Blue (3A/small schools) - Whataburger crowned three champions. Fairfield won the Blue title, Fort Worth Southwest took home the White crown and Plano West won a hotly contested game over North Crowley for the Orange championship.

Leading Plano West was senior guard/forward Sterling Melville who won tournament MVP honors after scoring 24 points in the championship game.

West earned its way into the championship after a string of close calls. Melville led the team with 19 points in West's first round 69-63 win over Mansfield Summit. Melville had 17 in West's one-point win over Klein Forest, and then led West over Richland in the semifinals, 64-58.

On the other end of the bracket, North Crowley looked unstoppable. Led by Rivals.com five star shooting guard Willie Warren, North Crowley looked to be on a mission to finally win the tournament after finishing as runners-up the last two seasons.
