Winthrop poses tough test

If the name Winthrop doesn't strike fear into you, then you aren't much of a college basketball fan. The Eagles are a mid-major that has played much more like a major in recent seasons, as they have owned the Big South conference over the last decade.

With everyone returning after a 2005-06 season that say Winthrop upset Tennessee in the first round of the NCAA tournament, the Eagles were set to join the ranks of Gonzaga as a mid-major school that would be worthy of an at-large bid to the tournament would they need it.

After a 9-3 start, the Eagles have dropped all their chances against ranked teams. With all those games on the road, the Eagles narrowly missed wins at North Carolina, Maryland and Wisconsin. A&M represents the last ranked opponent this season for Winthrop, and perhaps the last chance to earn an at-large resume producing win.

A&M, on the other hand, is getting ready for Big 12 conference play that starts Saturday with Kansas State. Winthrop represents a strong test that will get the Aggies playing competitions on the level that they will see for the remainder of the season.

The test begins tonight at 8:30 p.m. at Reed Arena.
