Holiday tournaments dot Lone Star landscape
For most the week between Christmas and New Year's Eve is playing with new toys, spending time with the family, getting a little relaxation or going back to work.
But for high school basketball teams, the week is one of the biggest before playoffs. That rings especially true in Texas where a number of high profile tournaments dot the landscape with three big ones in the D/FW Metroplex and one of the nation's largest in Houston.
Academy National Invitational - Houston
The ANI tournament is one of the top high school Holiday tournaments in the country, welcoming plenty of top-ranked teams from across the country in the national division. Two Texas teams will be in the national division, including Alief Hastings, which boasts A&M signee B.J. Holmes. The other Texas team in the national bracket is Kingwood, the No. 10 team in the nation, with Texas Tech signee Mike Singletary.
Holmes and his Hastings teammates got a stern test Wednesday night when they faced New Jersey St. Patrick, the No. 2 team in the nation, in the tournament's opening game. Holmes faced Villanova signee, and Rivals.com four-star, Corey Fisher at point guard. St. Patrick's also has four-star small forward Jeff Robinson (Memphis) and five-star sophomore guard Dexter Strickland.
