Huey ready for a 'bloody spring'

When Kilgore, Texas offensive lineman Michael Huey officially reports to Austin next month to begin his career as a member of the Texas Longhorns football team, he can rest easy with the fact that there's a little bit of East Texas waiting for him on the 40 Acres.

With an East Texas pipeline that includes two former Kilgore teammates from the 2006 recruiting class, the No.4-rated offensive guard got a taste of what life as a Longhorn will be like when he was in Austin for his official visit this past weekend.

"As soon as I got there I got a chance to spend a little bit of time with Britt (Mitchell) and Eddie (Jones)," Huey said. "My host was Steve Moore. He's a nice guy. We pretty much hung out with Eddie and Britt the entire time. I got a chance to get to know the players from the last recruiting class and the guys in my glass really well. They are great guys"

When asked about the highlights of the trip, Huey said it was a combination of things, but the overall comfort level that he felt while in Austin stood out considerably.

"They had a player's panel and there were some freshmen and older players there," Huey said. "They gave us an idea of the things that we could expect. The No.1 one thing for me would have to be the friendships and fellowship that I felt from everyone."

Next up for Huey is his enrollment in January.

"Most of the coaches have told me that they are real excited," Huey said. "They tell me that all the time. I just want to get down there and contribute as much as I can. Coach (Mac) McWhorter told me that it was going to be a bloody spring. I'm going to work as hard as I can when I get there. I'm not really worried about if I play (as a freshman)."

Although Huey was expected to play in next month's Offense-Defense All-America Bowl in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. On January 4th, but after taking his visit this weekend, Huey has decided against playing in the game as he turns his focus to the start of the next chapter in his life.
