Capel begins new era in OU basketball
The Oklahoma men's basketball team begins the Jeff Capel era this evening inside the Lloyd Noble Arena when the Sooners take on Oklahoma Christian at 7pm. Capel makes his debut after taking over the OU hoops program following the departure of Kelvin Sampson to Indiana.
Capel heads into the first of his two exhibition games with plenty of questions as the Sooners look to replace their biggest offensive weapon in Terrell Everett as well as the bulk of their interior following the departures of Taj Gray and Kevin Bookout.
Michael Neal (6-3, 198, Sr., 12.4 ppg, 2.6 rpg) returns as the only major offensive threat from the 2005-06 season. Neal will be expected to carry the offensive load from the perimeter without much help from a strong inside game.
The Sooners will look to Austin Johnson (6-3, 160, So., 3.1 ppg, 2.0 rpg) to take over the point guard duties while Taylor Griffin (6-7, 232, So., 3.1 ppg, 2.8 rpg) is expected to start at the forward position while David Goldbold (6-5, 215, Jr., 5.7 ppg, 3.2 rpg) fills out the rest of the starting three-guard lineup while adding some much-needed rebounding help.
