Kaun out 3-to-6 weeks

Junior big man Sasha Kaun was planning to have a breakthrough year for the No. 3 ranked Kansas Jayhawks, but those plans have been put on hold. According to Bill Self, the 6-foot-11, 245-pound center will miss 3-to-6 weeks due to a partially torn patella tendon. With Kaun and fellow big man C.J. Giles out, KU has suddenly become a small team in the frontcourt.

"We had a rough day yesterday," said Self. "Sasha Kaun hurt his knee. He partially tore his patella tendon, so Sasha will be out 3-to-6 weeks. But other than that, everything is great. He will be out a little bit, but yesterday was a bad day.

"We scrimmaged pitifully, Sasha got hurt and Darrell Arthur cut his hand," he added. "He couldn't participate, but he will be fine by tomorrow. My excitement level right now is a little tempered, to be quite candid. Because I know we have a long ways to go before we're ready to play, even Thursday night."

On paper, Self's squad had one of the strongest frontcourts in college basketball before the season started, but that's no longer the case. Aside from Kaun being out of action for 3-to-6 weeks, Self indicated that he has not yet made a decision about Giles.
