Nebraska was one play away from getting the biggest win of the Bill Callahan era, but a Terrence Nunn fumble with 2:17 left in the fourth quarter gave defending national champion Texas the ball back to set up a game winning field goal to beat NU 22-20.
It was a game were the Huskers were down by as much as 16-7 and 19-14 in the second half, but NU took a 20-19 lead off a Marlon Lucky halfback pass to Nate Swift at the five minute mark of the fourth quarter.
Following the defeat, Callahan was literally speechless in the post game press conference.
"There's not really much to say," Callahan said. "We had an opportunity to close the game and misfortune occurred and victory was more or less swept away on that third down play."
Senior defensive end Jay Moore, who finished with three tackles for loss and one quarterback sack was also speechless after the loss.
"We always felt like we were a pretty good ball team," Moore said. "We thought we could win this game, we really did. We weren't just trying to measure ourselves. We honestly thought we could go out and win this game. For a while, we were there, we had it won. It's a tough deal, but we'll get better from it."
The win improves Texas to 7-1 and 4-0 in the Big 12 Conference, while Nebraska falls to 6-2 and 3-1 in Big 12 play.
