Video: Wheat and White rise up OT thriller
GRAND BLANC, Mich. - Given up for dead after a 1-3 start, Flint Carman-Ainsworth has surged back into playoff contention by winning three straight games in the Big 9 conference.
The Cavaliers' latest victory, a 30-22 come-from-behind thriller in overtime on the road, spoiled Grand Blanc's homecoming festivities. But it also moved Carman-Ainsworth within two victories of clinching a playoff berth.
Michigan State commitments Ryan Wheat and George White each played central roles in Carman-Ainsworth's emotional victory. Wheat and White started on both sides of the ball for the Cavaliers and both future Spartans were completely spent after the dramatic victory.
Wheat, who pulled from his offensive tackle position and faced double and even triple teams when he was at defensive tackle, could barely move after the key conference victory.
Wheat was running on empty when he beat a triple team and broke through the Grand Blanc offensive line in overtime to drop Bobcat senior quarterback Jonathon Mora for a 10-yard loss on third-down in overtime.
"I can't describe how good it felt to see Ryan drag him down like that," said White. "That might be the best play I've seen him make. That was real big for us, real big."
"I knew that I had to make a play," said Wheat of the sack. "I was dog tired, but I came hard and didn't quit. I just kept on coming and I knew I had to leave it all out there on the field. I left it on the field too. I don't have anything left.
One play later, Mora, still jumpy after getting tossed to the ground by Wheat, overthrew gifted junior Mark Ingram II in the back of the end zone.
"I have been coaching here for 14 years and we've had a lot of big games and big victories against Grand Blanc, but this probably ranks up there as the best," said Cavs coach Jerry Parker. "To come from behind like we did against a team like this on their field for their homecoming is really special."
