"Get off the field", it continues to be defensive coordinator John Chavis' message to his team as preparations for Marshall continue. The Vols have only forced one fourth quarter punt the last two games and have surrendered five second half touchdowns in the eight possessions the last two games.
Obviously, getting off the field has been point of emphasis all week on the practice field.
"I think we have to make plays when it is time to make them," cornerback/safety Antwan Stewart said. "We have not made plays in crunch time. We just need to find a way to do that. We have done it early in games, but not in crunch time."
One of the biggest questions surrounding this defense is 'are the Vols running out of gas?', Chavis does not feel that his team is getting worn down late in games.
"We made a couple of mistakes and didn't do some things as well as I anticipated, a little bit of it in the third quarter," Chavis said. "We got ourselves in some situations we shouldn't have been in, like with that second-and-22 play. I keep going back to that, that was a big turning point in the game. We'd gotten after them pretty good there, but obviously that's not the only play.
We had a chance on fourth-down to stop the quarterback run, we didn't do the job tackling, we were in position and if we get a hat across there we, if we do we've got him stopped on fourth down
We had chances to stop drives and we didn't get them stopped. The last touchdown, that was not a good coverage. That's just the way it was, it happened and we're going to learn from it, go on and get ready to play Marshall."
