Coach Melvin Smith back in the groove

The only new face on Mississippi State's coaching staff was former Bulldog assistant Melvin Smith. Coach Smith embraced the opportunity to come back to his old stomping grounds and hopefully finish his coaching career. As Mississippi State is starting to take off, Coach Smith is glad he got a chance to jump on this ship.


Joining the staff in the spring Coach Smith was behind on the progress that Coach Croom had made with the program. Just in the short time he's been on the Bulldog staff he's seen some major changes in the Bulldog program.


"I think we are headed in the right direction and what I mean by that is that we are headed for excellence. The last couple of years we've went 3-8, if you're basing progress on that then we are at a stand still. I don't judge it on that, I judge it on the attitudes of the players, what our team looks like, what they act like, how our players are doing in the classroom, and what we are teaching them, and what principles we encourage them to live by.
