NBAPA Camp Insight – Post Player Training
June 22, 2006 - The National Basketball Player Association's Top 100 Camp has once again convened in Richmond, Va., at Virginia Commonwealth's Siegel Center.
As expected on the event's first day, participants found themselves competing on the court while attempting to jell with guys they never played with previously.
Additionally the young men attended class sessions designed to educate and expose them to the rigors and challenges of college life.
But one under-reported aspect of the event is the coaching provided by NBA alumni. This was illustrated during yesterday's "free-time" period separating the first set of games and lunch from the start of classroom instruction.
Gathered on Court No. 3 to provide this voluntary instruction were Ralph Sampson, Tim McCormick, and Andrew Lang - a trio of ex-National Basketball pivot men collectively boasting 26 years of league experience. Anthony McClain, a Hoya recruiting target over a the past year, Jerai Grant, Clinton Chapman, Dallas Lauderdale, Ralph Sampson, III, Gregory Echenique and several others took advantage of this wealth of experience.
The session, in which most of the young men participated in for over an hour, consisted of McCormick, Lang, and the elder Sampson providing one on one instruction in post play moves and nuances. This included position establishment, feeling and sealing the defender, shielding the ball through body positioning, proper drop step footwork, and jump hook shot mechanics.
