Auburn assistant coach first to call McNeil

College coaches can make one phone call to recruits during the month of May and one of the first in-state prospects to hear from Auburn was Mobile, Ala., Davidson safety Michael McNeil.

Auburn assistant coach James Willis was the first to call the 6-foot-2, 195-pound McNeil. It came just days following a visit to Davidson High School by Willis and head coach Tommy Tuberville.

"Coach Willis called me Monday night," McNeil said. "He was the first coach to call me. He said, 'Mike, I just want to let you know we love you up here at Auburn and just because we don't send 1,000 letters a week doesn't mean we don't want you.'

"That's real big for me. Auburn is a school I'm very interested in. They're showing me love so of course I'm going to show love back."
