Spring Notebook: Time is now for DeCoud
Junior defensive back Thomas DeCoud always felt he was a ready to take on a starting role for Cal. The former Pinole Valley high school star, who was considered one of the "sleepers" when he was recruited by California head coach Jeff Tedford three years ago, is ready to show everyone what he can do. Expected to be a fixture in the Golden Bear secondary, BearTerritory caught up with the emerging defensive playmaker.
A brisk and sunny scene Friday evening at Memorial Stadium resulted in spirited play from both sides of the ball. With spring practices now winding down, it's evident that players over the last month have gotten a lot more comfortable with their roles and positions on the football field. All the work over the spring will culminate in tomorrow afternoon's blue-gold scrimmage game, which is set for 12 noon (PST) at old stadium.
During tomorrow's action, one of the players fans will definitely want to keep an eye out for is DeCoud. He is making a nice and swift transition into the starting secondary.
To date, DeCoud's opportunity has come the hard way during his first two seasons — on special teams. But with the graduation of both of Cal's safeties from a year ago — which includes former All-Pac-10 performer Donnie McCleskey — DeCoud now has his shot.
