Maddux: Loss of Carroll ''very damaging'' to VU
This morning, Vanderbilt sophomore power forward DeMarre Carroll requested a formal release from his scholarship at Vanderbilt. For VU's men's basketball program, the loss of what is the team's most physical and experienced frontcourt player is a crushing blow to the team's prospects for next season.
"He, in my opinion, was the best overall player last year and came up in key moments," former Vanderbilt guard Drew Maddux said. "It was really do to the passion that he plays with and the energy he brought to the court."
The unexpected loss of Carroll is paired with the graduation of senior forward/center Julian Terrell. The two led Vanderbilt in rebounding in all but six games this past season, and both averaged more than 30 minutes of playing time per game.
"You're losing your two best rebounders now," Maddux said. "In a league that has really upped its athleticism, long four and five men are now excellent rebounders and excellent athletes. This is going to kill Vanderbilt, because he always got those tough rebounds. Now you don't have that guy."
