Jonathon Mincy's college career, which has exceeded exepctations, still has one chapter remaining.
It's an important one.
The senior has 29 career starts to his credit, bringing some critical experience to a pass defense that endured some difficulties last season. Mincy has been a trusted performer since moving into the starting lineup in September of 2012 because he rarely makes strategic errors.
He knows which shoulder to play. He understands when he can count on safety help and when it won't be available. He interprets Jermaine Whitehead's calls correctly and adjusts thoughtfully to pre-snap changes.
The problem always has been tackling. He leaves his feet too often, which too often compromises his ability to affect a receiver after the catch. Mincy has added 20-25 pounds since his arrival prior to the 2010 season. That has sharpened his ability to body up against big receivers like Dorial Green-Beckham, similar guys overpowered him two years ago, but the missed tackles remain an issue.
Mincy is a good Southeastern Conference cornerback. He's also a popular player inside the locker room, where he generally plays the cut-up role. He's good at making people laugh. Teams need guys like that.
