Never satisfied

AUBURN | Carl Lawson was the most highly rated prospect ever to sign with Auburn when he put pen to paper 13 months ago.

Rivals's No. 4 overall Class of 2013 player justified the hype with a freshman season that included 7 1/2 tackles for loss and four sacks. He made tangible progress as the season progressed, which yielded more playing time and trust from defensive line coach Rodney Garner.

It was a successful varsity debut by almost any measure.

Except his.

"I was disappointed with my performance," Lawson said. "I can't wait to get better."

Lawson's disdain sounds like the function of unattainable expectations and, in some ways, that's exactly where it all begins. He was a truly dominant player at Milton High in suburban Atlanta, where Lawson finished his senior season with 44 tackles for loss.
