Dantonio offers Dowdy

One of the top offensive linemen in the Midwest for the class of 2015 is Rob Dowdy of Westerville South High School in Ohio. Michigan State recently extended a scholarship to Dowdy and was able to catch up with him and get the latest details on his recruitment.

Michigan State was able to host the 6-foot-6, 294-pound Dowdy on a visit this past week and during that time they extended him a scholarship.

"Yes sir they did (offer)," Dowdy said. "Coach Dantonio invited my mother and I into his office and he talked about how he runs his team and the main points he focuses on when they offer someone a scholarship.  He said I met all of those standards."

Dowdy has seen his scholarship offer list expand greatly the past few weeks. He now has a dozen BCS offers from schools such as Michigan State, Georgia Tech, Boston College, Arkansas, Cincinnati, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, West Virginia , Minnesota and

"I really enjoyed my visit it was great," Dowdy said. "I felt a real connection with all the coaches and they are all so personable, very family oriented. And coach Dantonio has coached several close family friends and they all speak highly of him."

Westerville South High School is one of the better programs in the Columbus Area and most Spartans fans are well aware that All-American and record-setting wide receiver B.J. Cunningham came out of there. Michigan State Coach Mike Tressel serves as the primary recruiter of the Columbus area for Michigan State.

With his size and athletic ability Dowdy could likely project at any spot on the offensive line. asked him about where the Spartans see him playing and if he has any additional visits lined up.

"I asked coach Dantonio about that and he said I would come in as a tackle," he said. "I do not have any other visits planned yet besides going back up to Michigan State for a spring practice"

Offensive Line Coach Mark Staten likes to have recruits come up to campus during spring practice so that they can observe a practice sessions, check out position meetings and meet some of the other players. It is all part of the rapport building process that Mark Dantonio focuses on.

As far as making a decision, Dowdy is still in the early stage of his recruitment, thought a pre-season decision is a possibility. We asked him about having a timetable or a favorite school.

"Not at this moment," Dowdy said. "I still want to keep an open mind."

Michigan State has an outstanding tradition of having outstanding offensive linemen from Ohio under Coach Dantonio and his staff. Players like Travis Jackson, Dan France and Donovan Clark all played critical role in winning the Big Ten title and Rose Bowl. You can be sure the staff will be keeping in frequent contact with Dowdy. will be sure to follow his recruitment as it unfolds over the coming months.

Dowdy is an excellent prospect and it is not a surprise that Michigan State offered. Winning championships starts in the trenches, adding a player like Dowdy to go with Kyonta Stallworth would be a strong statement for the future.
