Different dynamic

AUBURN | Gus Malzahn never thought the day would arrive when Hugh Freeze, trusted friend and confidante, would become the enemy.

Yet that's exactly what will happen this weekend.

Malzahn's Tigers will face Freeze's group from Ole Miss insider Jordan-Hare Stadium four days from now. What occurs Saturday night will involve two of the most intriguing college coaches of this generation and two men with a truly intimate understanding of how the other guy wants to attack.

"He's definitely a friend, one of my best friends in this business," Malzahn said. "We came from a similar background, a similar path. He's very talented. He's good at what he does. He's a great communicator and a very good football mind."

The two coaches met during the 1990s when Malzahn was coaching high-school ball in Arkansas. Freeze was using up-tempo ideas while coaching high-school ball in Tennessee, which encouraged the concept of sharing ideas.

Their spheres of influence were worlds apart.
