Players express shock

AUBURN -- Players are shocked on the Plains.

They learned during a 1 p.m. meeting that coach Gene Chizik, who recruited nearly every player on the roster, had been dismissed following the Tigers' 3-9 season. Tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen said the room was silent until players spontaneously rose to their feet to give Chizik a round of applause for his four years of work.

"Disappointed in the year, disappointed in having to let coach Chizik go but that's part of the business in college football -- especially at a big-time program like us in the SEC," Lutzenkirchen said. "It's tough to see someone go who you've been with for four years and someone who gave you a chance. I have a lot of respect for Coach Chizik and I know some program's going to get a great coach out of him."

Here are some other notable comments made by players this afternoon:

Lutzenkirchen on Chizik's future: "He'll be able to take a year or two off, maybe, and spend time with his family. Much-needed time, probably. He's got young kids so he'll be able to watch them grow up and be part of their adolescence."
