NOTEBOOK: McNeal says AU being coached better in '12

AUBURN -- Brian VanGorder's defensive system, which seemed flawed during the first few weeks of the season, now is beginning to look like a success story.


The Tigers' defensive coordinator deployed a variety of fronts and schemes against No. 2 LSU on Saturday night, holding one of the nation's most prolific scoring teams to 10 points. Safety Demetruce McNeal said after the Mississippi State loss that added familiarity would yield major steps forward in short order.


He was convinced things would improve quickly.


McNeal believes the LSU game supported his claim.


"People didn't believe me, but it's starting to show," said McNeal, who led the Tigers with 11 tackles Saturday night. "Last year, we weren't coached very well. We weren't as smart … as were are this year with a change on defense. We just wanted to show everybody what we're made of."
