NOTEBOOK: Pelton stays the course at DT
AUBURN -- Auburn's defensive tackles have struggled during the team's first two games this season, but that apparently won't affect the depth chart this weekend.
Assistant coach Mike Pelton, who works with the Tigers' defensive line, said Wednesday that he's expecting to start Jeffrey Whitaker and Angelo Blackson again this weekend.
"Those are our guys. There are no shortcuts to improvement," Pelton said. "Everybody wants it to happen fast. As a coach, you want it to happen now. I have to be realistic and realize there are going to be growing pains."
These have been difficult days for Pelton, a former Auburn letterman who is expecting better performances along the line of scrimmage. Still, those problems, which he said are rooted in losing control of gaps and not affecting the quarterback, doesn't weaken his approach toward preparing his players.
The plan, Pelton said, is tried and true.
"You know you're saying the right things. We know we're doing the right things with them," he said. "It's frustrating as a coach when you put them in the positions to make plays and they're not making them -- you have to continue to find somebody else or they've got to step it up."
