News and Notes

In the NCAA Basketball tournament they like to call it "survive and advance". That's exactly what the Hawkeyes did on Saturday afternoon as they survived a significant scare from Northern Illinois, holding off the Huskies, 18-17. We have all your news and notes from the action that took place, including which true freshmen played, the complete dress list, and much more.

Game Balls

OFFENSE: Damon Bullock - The Iowa offense struggled to find the end zone all day long until sophomore Damon Bullock popped a 23 yard run off the left side on a 3rd and 8 play to give the Hawkeyes the lead. No one expected Bullock to shoulder the load that he did, but he ended up with 30 carries for 150 yards and also caught 3 passes for 26 yards. While Iowa's offense sputtered for a good part of the day, especially through the air, Bullock more than did his part on the ground.

DEFENSE: Joe Gaglione - The Hawkeyes were getting beat up pretty badly on defense early in the game on Saturday. Then the Iowa defensive line started to find its stride. Joe Gaglione led the charge late in the first half and early in the second with a quarterback sack and six total tackles, including three for loss. Gaglione was also credited with a forced fumble as the Iowa defense held the Huskies to under 100 yards total offense in the second half.

SPECIAL TEAMS: John Wienke - When John Wienke came to Iowa he was a highly recruited quarterback. While his on the field contributions haven't been significant, he has always been a solid leader in the locker room. On Saturday, Wienke finally got his chance, but it was as a punter in a key situation. The 5th year senior pooched punted the ball 43 yards, pinning the Huskies at the one yard line after being downed by senior Greg Castillo.

Junior place kicker Mike Meyer could have very easily been named our special teams player of the game. Meyer knocked in four of five field goal attempts, including a 50 yarder, which he slipped when kicking, into a swirling wind. Meyer also connected from 22, 30, and 34 yards which resulted in 12 of Iowa's 18 points. Meyer now has 171 career points, which ties him for 11th all-time in Iowa Football history with Ladell Betts, David Hudson, and Marvin McNutt.

The Hawkeyes were led on defense by James Morris and Anthony Hitchens, who had eight stops on Saturday. Joe Gaglione and Tom Donatell had six stops each and both forced fumbles. Tanner Miller and B.J. Lowery finished with five stops each.

B.J. Lowery left the game on Saturday after teammate Carl Davis fell on him near the sidelines. Lowery was holding his shoulder area, but x-rays were negative and he is expected to be ready to go next weekend against Iowa State.

Brett Van Sloten seemed to injury his leg, but returned to action in the second half. He was replaced for a few snaps by Andrew Donnal.
