Gales take aim at Aggies
The Saint Mary's men's basketball team continues their three-game road trip with a visit to the Pan American Center to take on the Aggies on Thursday night for a 7:00pm tipoff. The game will not be televised but can be viewed online via Aggie Access and at www.SMCGales.com.
Saint Mary's accolades
Saint Mary's is currently receiving three votes in the AP Poll and the Coaches Poll with impressive wins over St. John's and Texas Tech earlier this season. Their only two losses have come against stiff Mountain West Conference competition in BYU and San Diego State, both nationally ranked opponents.
One of their team leaders, senior guard Mickey McConnell, has been nominated to the Bob Cousey Award, which is given to the nations top point guard.
Scouting Saint Mary's
The Gaels are currently 9-2 this season and currently ranks in the top-20 out of 336 teams in eight categories: Scoring Offense (10th), Scoring Margin (6th), Field-Goal Percentage (7th), Three-point Field Goals per game (15th), Free Throw percentage (20th), Assists per game (10th), and Assist turnover ratio (16th).
The contest between the Gaels and Aggies marks the third time the two teams have squared off. The series is currently tied 1-1 with SMC winning the last contest 100-68 on Nov. 13, 2009. The two teams have never played each other in Las Cruces, NM.
The Aggies are currently on a four-game winning streak heading into this final game of a five-game home stretch. With injuries to key players, coach Menzies has had to hand out playing time to some of the new and inexperienced players on the team. The team has struggled at times without the leadership and top-scorer Troy Gillenwater in the line-up. Gillenwater is not expected to play tomorrow night against the Gaels nor is Wendell McKines, both nursing foot injuries.
The Aggies will be about a five-point underdog in this game. Home court advantage will be key in the game if the Aggies can draw a good crowd to the game.
Game time tipoff is set for 7:00pm.
