Three beginning to emerge for Mississippi receiver

Wednesday marked the first day college coaches could initiate phone contact with prospects in the 2011 signing class.

Predictably, Josh Pinkston's phone was ringing Wednesday night.

The three-star wide receiver from Forest, Miss., fielded calls from Ole Miss and Southern Mississippi, with the coaches from the Rebels and the Golden Eagles "just checking on me, see how the season was going."

Pinkston has rolled up 225 yards receiving and one touchdown in two games so far this season, adding another 130 yards rushing and a touchdown on nine carries. Additionally, Pinkston has returned a punt for a touchdown for Forest, which is off to a 2-0 start and idle this weekend.

"My game is good right now, but I need to increase another level to get to where we want to be at the end of the season," Pinkston said.

Pinkston said he doesn't plan to attend any college games Saturday. Instead, he's still taking recruiting slowly, evaluating new offers and planning to wait until after the season to take official visits and until National Signing Day in early February to announce a decision. Tulane was the latest to offer the 6-foot-2, 190-pound Pinkston, extending an offer late last week.

"I really don't know too much about them, but I know they have a great academic program and pretty good talent in football," Pinkston said.

Pinkston said three programs _ Alabama, Ole Miss and Mississippi State _ stand out right now as favorites, though Southern Miss and Memphis are in the mix as well. He said he'll be keeping a close eye on those programs throughout the season, looking for the right fit.

"I want to see the position I'll be playing and other things, like how they'll be and the depth chart," Pinkston said. "(Winning) is going to be a big part of what I'm looking for. I want to go to a good program, win some games, keep the tradition going and try to win a national championship."
