Football first for sprint champ Demps

As Florida's Jeff Demps was competing in the 100-meter finals at the NCAA outdoor track and field championships this June in Oregon, several members of the Gator coaching staff huddled around a television set back in Gainesville.

When he won the event in 9.96 seconds, they were thrilled -- but not caught off guard.

"If you know Demps," Florida running backs coach Stan Drayton said, "you're not too surprised. He puts in the work. It's absolutely important to him. He's absolutely committed to whatever he's doing at that point in time."

As a sprinter, Demps had no equals at the NCAA level.

As a tailback, he also has become quite good.
