Augustus taking on senior leadership role

Sometimes it takes a while for a player to come to the realization that his college career is coming to a close.

But that has already begun to set in for Mississippi State rising senior Kodi Augustus. The 6-foot-8 forward started thinking about his final year with the Bulldogs as soon as the 2009-10 season concluded.

"It sunk in right after my last game," Augustus said. "It feels good. I've just got to come back and be an example to the younger guys."

Augustus has stepped up along with fellow four-year teammates Ravern Johnson, Riley Benock and Elgin Bailey to provide the leadership for the team following the departure of Jarvis Varnado and Barry Stewart.

I've been telling everybody not to take these years for granted because they fly by," Augustus said. "I'm just trying to be an example for the younger people and teach them the right way so that it will pay off."

The Baton Rouge, La., native saw his first major playing time last season appearing in 34 games and drawing 33 starts. He averaged 8.9 points and 5.4 rebounds for MSU shooting 40.4-percent from the floor.
