VT one of handful visited by rising DE
Virginia Tech played host to a visitor on Thursday. The stop through Blacksburg was just one of four visits this week for the lineman. Do any schools stand out at this point in time?
"I've taken all my visits this week," Ponte Vedra (Fla.) Nease defensive end Matt Roth said. "I went to Florida's camp on Sunday, I worked out at South Carolina on Tuesday and then I worked out at Duke on Wednesday. I was at Virginia Tech on Thursday for a visit too.
"All the visits were really good. Florida was pretty interested and invited me up for their camp in July. South Carolina offered me after camp and I got to tour Virginia Tech and check out all the facilities."
Did any of the visits really stick out?
"South Carolina was really surprising," he said. "They showed me everything they were planning on adding to their stadium. They are renovating everything. They also got a new education center for all the athletes for tutoring to help them with their work. It was real nice and brand new there. It was really impressive.
"Also, Virginia Tech was really nice too. They're building a lot of new stuff. The locker room and player lounges are all new. It was real nice."
Roth discussed the Hokies more.
"I think it's really nice there," he said. "I got to look around and they have what I want to major in, business construction. They are renovating everything, I liked how everything looked."
Roth got some time with Tech's coaches on the visit.
"I talked to Coach Wiles all day and met Coach Foster and got to talk to Coach Beamer," he stated. "They were all really excited to have me there. It was nice to meet all of them. They just said that they really liked how I play and I fit in really well. They liked my style of football and how I go hard every play."
Tech and South Carolina made impressive showings, but one school is still lingering due in part to family ties.
"I really like Florida," he said. "I'm really trying to get that offer. I hope I can get one from those guys. I really want it and if they offer that's where I'll go. I've always grown up a Gator and been around it. The SEC is a great conference and Florida is winning a lot right now."
It doesn't hurt that Roth's father played for the Gators as well.
In the meantime, even more schools are making a push for the lineman.
"Purdue and West Virginia offered me this week," he said. "I'm up to 10 or 11 offers along with Air Force, Buffalo, Virginia Tech, South Carolina, Illinois, Cincinnati, Michigan State, Marshall and Arkansas State."
Roth maintains no favorites at this time and is nowhere near a decision.
"I'm still pretty open and want to see what comes in."
The defensive end earned honorable mention all-county honors as a junior while posting 88 tackles, 27 for loss, 14 sacks and one interception.
