Sunshine State CB will visit Ole Miss Jan. 22
Tony Grimes doesn't know a lot about Ole Miss.
But what the Hollywood (Hills), Fla., three-star cornerback does know about the Southeastern Conference school, he likes.
Grimes holds double-digit BCS offers - including Ohio State, Miami, Georgia and South Carolina -- but has narrowed his list to a trio of finalists: Michigan, Maryland and Ole Miss. The 5-foot-11, 166-pounder visited the Wolverines and Terrapins back during the fall and will trip to Oxford, Miss., for his final official visit Jan. 22.
"(Ole Miss) has won a lot of games and been very successful the last two years," Grimes said. "You know it's a competitive team, and one where you'll have the chance to be successful as a team."
Grimes, of course, wants his college choice to be competitive, but he also wants his selection to give him the chance to contribute early. That's something Ole Miss certainly does. The Rebels two starting cornerbacks in 2009 - Cassius Vaughn and Marshay Green - are graduating, leaving holes in the secondary to be filled.
"I'm in love with that depth chart over there," Grimes said. "I know they really need me, and I know I can help. Coach (Chris) Vaughn is a great guy, and it's also nice to be recruited by who would be your position coach. Telling me I have a chance to play early isn't just a line. I'm interested to get over there and see the place."
Michigan was thought to have the advantage for Grimes, but that has wavered recently. Linebackers coach Jay Hopson was recruiting Grimes for the Wolverines, but the assistant has since accepted an offer to be the defensive coordinator at Memphis.
And while participating in the Offense-Defense Bowl in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Grimes commented that he didn't want to play in cold weather, leading to speculation that Michigan was the school most affected by his thoughts on the climate. But on Sunday night, Grimes elaborated on that statement.
"I definitely don't like the cold, but it won't be the main factor in my decision," Grimes said. "And at times, everywhere is going to be cold. It wasn't terribly cold when I went to Michigan and Maryland earlier."
The Rebels have also become interested in the words of Grimes' teammate Clarence Murphy, who made what seemed to be a revealing quote on Jan. 8 to TheWolverine.com, Michigan's Rivals.com affiliate. Murphy committed to Maryland over Michigan, and then offered up this regarding Grimes.
"Tony Grimes and I are going our separate ways and Maryland was the best school for me academically," Murphy said.
Grimes laughed it off Sunday.
"I don't know what he's talking about," Grimes said with a chuckle. "I wasn't with him when he said it, but I'm going to visit Ole Miss, see it up close and then make a decision on Signing Day."
Rivals.com rates Grimes as the No. 73 overall player in the state of Florida, and he was named the best tackler of the Aloha Prep Bowl in Hawaii. Grimes led the Mainland team in tackles.
