Dawgs topple UNC-Asheville

A little defense went a long way to curing Georgia's recent offensive issues as the Bulldog turned to the press to defeat visiting UNC-Ashville 79-58 before a Stegeman Coliseum Crowd of 4,667.

"We pressed a lot tonight until we established a lead and didn't have to anymore," head coach Mark Fox said. "This team is not built ideally for that, but ultimately this program will press a lot and were able to do some of that tonight."

Senior Ricky McPhee led all players with 20 pints, adding four assists, four steals and three rebounds. McPhee finished 8-of-9 from the field and only missed one of his five 3-point attempts.

He wasn't the only Bulldogs enjoying a solid evening.

Four players finished in double-figures for the Bulldogs (2-2), including Travis Leslie who scored 17 points, including a monster dunk in the second half that brought the crowd to its feet.

Sophomore forward Trey Thompkins added 16 points and five rebounds, while senior center Albert Jackson added 10 points and six boards.

John Williams led Asheville (0-4) with 14 points and seven rebounds.

"Asheville is a hard-nosed, well coached team and I give them a lot of credit for competing hard and fighting back", Fox added. "I think we are deeper and bigger than them and that eventually worked to our advantage in the end."

Georgia returns to action Friday when the Bulldogs host Jacksonville State.
